CHAPTER 4
ISRAEL
The Israeli case is the third and final one in our comparative journey. As in the previous two cases, we begin in Section 4.1 with a concise sociohistorical background of the three Israeli groups: Arab-Palestinians, Mizrahim, and Ethiopians. Contextualizing everyday experiences of our interviewees in wider historical, political, and socioeconomic contexts underscores these groups’ different positions with regard to the Zionist national narrative. We suggest that this is a crucial factor in explaining stigmatization and racism in Israel. It is also highlights some taken-for-granted assumptions with respect to national belonging in the United States and Brazil. In Section 4.2, we examine the multidimensional facets of groupness among these three groups: the strong national groupness of Arab-Palestinians, whose sense of group identity is shaped through the historical lenses of the enduring Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the dissonant racial groupness of Ethiopians, who are stigmatized largely due to their skin color, even though they construct their self-identification as full members of the Zionist project; and the weak sense of ethnic groupness of Mizrahi interviewees, who for the most part downplay their ethnic self-identity. Section 4.3 analyzes these groups’ experiences of stigmatization and discrimination, and Section 4.4 describes how they react to such incidents in situ, as well as their views about the best ways to deal with social exclusion. In Section 4.5, we summarize our findings and situate them at the intersection between historical background, groupness, and available repertoires of exclusion, incorporation, and national belonging.
